What is a Board Certified Veterinary Dentist?

Veterinary dentistry is one of more than twenty veterinary specialties recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Specialty certification requires 3-6 years of specialty training beyond the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Credentials of expertise and successfully completing an extensive written and practical examination must be met before the applicant is designated as a "Board Certified Specialist" or "Diplomate". Board Certified Veterinary Dentists are trained in advanced veterinary dental diagnostics and treatments.

Dr. Robert Boyd

Dr. Robert C. Boyd is a graduate of Texas A&M University and has practiced veterinary medicine in Houston for over 30 years. Since February of 1999, Dr. Boyd has limited his practice strictly to veterinary dentistry. Dr. Boyd is Board Certified in Veterinary Dentistry, and is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. Dr. Boyd is also a past President of the Harris County Veterinary Medical Association and past President of the American Veterinary Dental Society.

I believe that my experience in small animal practice has equipped me to better understand and serve the dental and oral needs of my veterinary dental patients. I have always had pet dogs and cats and even raised and cared for farm animals as a high school student. While working with and raising farm animals for my Future Farmers of America projects, I became interested in veterinary medicine and made a decision to become a veterinarian.

After graduation from veterinary school at Texas A & M University, I entered the United States Air Force where I was a Base Veterinarian in Aviano, Italy. Upon completion of my tour of duty, I received an honorable discharge and came to Houston to pursue my passion of treating and caring for small animal patients.

I met Dr. D. N. Streater through an A & M classmate and joined him in small animal practice. We opened and operated several small animal veterinary clinics during our partnership of 30+ years.

In 1999 I was very fortunate to be able to change the direction of my veterinary practice from general small animal medicine and surgery to a small practice devoted to veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. After making this change, I applied for and was accepted into the specialty training program of the American Veterinary Dental College.
